TrashTrack

Environmental challenge(s) met
Waste Management

Country:
United States

City:
Seattle

Outline of project:
Supported by the SENSEable City Lab and inspired by the NYC Green Initiative, TrashTrack focuses on how pervasive technologies can expose the challenges of waste management and sustainability.

Using a network of tiny locatable and identifiable 'smart tags', TrashTrack is able to follow different waste items through a city's waste management system in series of real-time visualisations. The primary aim of this monitoring is to better understand the waste 'removal chain' taking place in cities. By taking a bottom-up approach to managing resources, TrashTrack hopes to promote positive behaviour change by increasing awareness of recycling and waste disposal processes within urban environments through the deployment of sensors and mobile technologies.
