Forage Tracking

Environmental challenge(s) met
Waste Management

Country:
Brazil

City:
Sao Paulo

Outline of project:
Using smart sensors the Forage Tracking project is mapping the tacit knowledge and spatial organisation of the 'Catadores' - informal recyclers in Brazilian cities. The project is also developing participatory platforms that will help them to organise their activities and connect with citizens.

Due to the lack of formal recycling systems in Brazil, Catadores have become increasingly more common as citizens try to make a living by collecting recyclable material in order to sell it back in bulk to industry. As most Catadores gather waste material by roaming cities in trucks or by foot with hand-pushed carts, they are able to collect large amounts of waste. However, the method to their 'madness' is not well understood. Therefore the Forage Tracking initiative has started using GPS and mobile phones to track these processes; with the aim offering ways to make collections more efficient through route optimisation or by creating new partnerships with local businesses its hoped that there will be less missed opportunities to recycle.

What stage is the project at?
In Production
